195th Anniversary of Nat Turner's Execution

HE ROSE AGAINST THE CHAINS ON THE BODY. WE RISE AGAINST THE CHAINS ON THE SPIRIT.

Nat Turner was a preacher, a prophet, and a man who read the heavens.

He believed Spirit spoke through visions, prophecy, and celestial signs. In February 1831, a solar eclipse darkened the sky. Turner interpreted it as a divine signal. Later, he witnessed another extraordinary sign in the heavens, associated with the image of a Black hand stretched across the sun.

He understood that his calling was greater than the bondage imposed upon his body.

In August 1831, Turner and his fellow conspirators rose against the institution of slavery. On November 11, he was executed.

One hundred and ninety-five years later, we gather to honor his memory and confront the chains that survived enslavement.

THE FIRST MOVEMENT: ANCESTRAL REVERENCE

We speak their names.

Nat Turner. Hark. Henry. Nelson. Sam. Will. Jack.

We acknowledge Cherry, traditionally identified as Turner's wife, his mother Nancy, and the countless ancestors whose names were erased from history.

We honor those who resisted physical enslavement, those executed, those killed in the reprisals, and those denied the dignity of remembrance and burial.

Through ancestral offerings, prayers, and a symbolic burial observance, we acknowledge their lives, their sacrifices, and their struggle for physical liberation.

THE SECOND MOVEMENT: BREAKING THE SPIRITUAL PRISON

Enslavement did not stop at the body.

Religion was weaponized to colonize the consciousness, demonize African spiritual traditions, sever ancestral connections, and teach generations that divine authority belonged to those who oppressed them.

Fear became doctrine.

Submission became righteousness.

Ancestral wisdom became something to condemn.

And generations inherited the shame, terror, silence, and spiritual dependency that followed.

THIS IS THE GENERATIONAL SPELL WE ARE BREAKING.

Through Hoodoo conjuration, ancestral petitions, cleansing, unbinding, and ceremonial chain-breaking, we will confront the spiritual conditioning imposed through colonization and religious enslavement.

We break the spell of religious terror.

We break the binding of consciousness.

We break the inherited shame surrounding ancestral traditions.

We break the chains of spiritual submission and the belief that we need another's permission to reach Spirit.

We reclaim our minds, our spiritual authority, our ancestral knowledge, and the freedom to determine our relationship with the Divine.

WRITTEN IN THE HEAVENS

On the anniversary of Turner's execution, Jupiter and Ketu converge in Magha, the sidereal mansion of the ancestors and the ancestral throne.

Jupiter, the teacher of sacred wisdom, meets Ketu, the force of severance and liberation.

A profound celestial symbolism for a rite honoring a man who read the heavens while confronting the bondage imposed upon him.

THE RITUAL

We cannot change what our ancestors endured.

But we can confront the conditioning imposed upon them, reclaim what was suppressed, and choose what we carry into the generations ahead.
